Peace Settlement of Territorial Dispute: Ecuador-Peru case study
Rigó, Michael ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
This thesis analyses the peace process between Ecuador and Peru and stimulates discussion in the field of conflict resolution. On Monday, October 26th, 1998, President of Peru Alberto Fujimori and Ecuador Jamil Mahuad Witt signed an international agreement that ended more than 150 years lasting territorial conflict. A series of hostile acts and armed conflicts have accompanied these neighbouring states for decades. Four states became the guarantor of the peace treaty: Brazil, the United States, Argentina and Chile. Complicated negotiations began in 1995 after a short war on the Cenepa River. The negotiating teams of the guaranteeing states used various mediation strategies, including the organization of negotiations, sanctions and financial incentives. The aim of this qualitative case study is an analysis of the causes of successful mediation performed by the guaranteeing states. The research follows the theoretical part, which describes the so-called contingency approach and ripeness theory.
Volunteerism or Tourism? Teaching English in Developing Countries
Pinkavová, Zuzana ; Rynda, Ivan (advisor) ; Šremer, Pavel (referee)
This diploma thesis addresses the phenomenon of volunteerism in the form of teaching English in the so-called developing countries. The focus is especially on its direct form, without the mediation of any third party, where people from the Global North arrange their volunteer stays directly with the people from the Global South whom they then visit and teach English as volunteers. The main objective of this thesis is to determine whether this form of volunteerism is beneficial and if so then who benefits from it to what extent and in what way. My research provides a critical analysis of this phenomenon through a review of literature concerned with the broader context of this topic and qualitative research which consists of two parts. First, I have conducted field research in Ecuador where I have taught English as a volunteer in a local school. Then I have conducted semi-structured interviews with volunteers from the Global North who had participated in similar volunteer stays in the Global South. Through this research, I have come to the conclusion that the described form of volunteerism can be very beneficial for all its participants if it is well established. However, its main benefit lies not in the improvement of the level of local English but in its potential of supporting intercultural...
Comparison of geographical curriculum of Spanish-speaking countries
Kořanová, Michaela
The present thesis compares geografical education in Argentina, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico and Spain. The main subject is the concept of the geografical education of level ISCED 2, presented in binding curriculum of the foremntioned countries. Content analysis of the curriculum aims to find out whether general geographical education is being unified or not. This thesis seeks to verify or falsify the hypothesis of bases of the elementary general geographical education being consistent in globalised world. This hypothesis is justified by the fact that educational potential of geography (certain basis of maternal discipline) is very similar across the world, as are main educational needs of today's society. Undoubtedly, the needs determine the goals, topics and content structure of geographical education. The structure of the thesis is congruent with the forementioned goals. The first part gives broader background of the subject. The second part is the research, its methodology and results. The concept of geographical education in curriculum was assessed through quantitaive and qualitative content analysis. Quantitative analysis focused on the frequency of key words (indicators of content unification) in educational goals and main topics. If the given indicator had been found to be present in at least...

Lhotáková, Zuzana ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Opatrný, Josef (referee)
Zuzana Lhotáková: Policy of sustainable development in Ecuador in the context of the region of Latin America Abstract Sustainable development can be defined as a strategy that enables the long-term needs of humanity to be met within the limits of natural resources. Since ecosystems of global importance (Amazon rainforests) and rich deposits of natural resources are located in Latin America, future development of this region is going to have impact on planetary level. Ecuador as a developing country with extreme biodiversity and vast deposits of oil and metals is perfect object for my case study. Constitution of Ecuador (2008) recognizes "Mother Earth" as a subject of law with specific legal entitlements and promotes the pursuit of buen vivir2 as an obligation of state. The aim of the study was to analyze how several selected individuals in Ecuador who openly embrace the sustainable develompent or buen vivir concept perceive official state policies in this regard. The following aim was to evaluate how these implemented policies correspond with principles of sustainable development or buen vivir promoted in the Constitution. In my thesis I analyze the content of semi-structured interview and participant observation records which I have collected during my field research in Ecuador. The majority of interviewed...
